If you are following a gluten free diet, the Co-op has several services that may help you to find the products you need. They are: our Gluten Free foods list, shelf labels, the Celiac Sprue Association Product Guide Book, brochures on celiac disease and gluten free baking, Gluten free deli guide, and gluten free store tours with our registered dietitian.
On the brochure wall, near the Service Desk in the Hanover and Lebanon stores, you will find the yellow handout titled, “Find Gluten Free Foods Easily at the Co-op.” This is an alphabetical listing of the labeled gluten free products we carry and their aisle location. Or you can download and print the Hanover store list and Lebanon store list.
If you are in the aisles at the Hanover or Lebanon stores these days, you will see something bright yellow sticking out of the shelves. These are the Gluten Free (GF) shelf tags that we have installed to help our customers find gluten free products more easily. GF shelf tags are placed at products that have been labeled by the manufacturer as “Gluten Free”.
Not all items in a product line may be gluten free; for example, Annie’s Naturals salad dressings and Nature’s Path/Envirokids cereals have several varieties that are marked as Gluten Free, while others contain gluten. Our Gluten Free shelf tag directs customers to the brands that declare “gluten free” on the label of some or all varieties. IMPORTANT: You still must read the product label to find exactly which ones within the brand are the Gluten Free choices.
Many products we carry are gluten free but this is not stated on the product label, for example, on mustard and relish, you usually won’t find the words “Gluten free” on the label, even though they are made without gluten ingredients. Customers can still identify these “unmarked” GF products, however. They are listed in the big blue Celiac Sprue Association Product guide, at the service desk. The book may be signed out to use while in the store.
Co-op members may borrow the previous year’s edition from the Co-op library located upstairs at the Hanover store. Personal copies may be purchased directly from the Celiac Sprue Association.
We have two additional gluten free brochures: “Living Gluten-Free” and “Gluten-Free Baking.” Both contain additional information and tips for a successful Gluten-free lifestyle.
Look for the list of gluten-free deli brands on the back of our Co-op Deli Nutrition guide, found at the Deli counter.
