Tobacco-Free Policy

SCOPE:

This policy covers all properties owned or leased by the Hanover Consumer Cooperative Society, Inc.

PURPOSE:

Effective January 1, 2009, the Hanover Consumer Cooperative will not sell any tobacco products. Effective January 1, 2010, the Hanover Consumer Cooperative’s properties will be tobacco free. The Co-op is committed to promoting a safe and healthy environment for our employees, members, customers and vendors. *
This policy will:

  • Create a healthier environment for everyone who visits our stores by eliminating secondhand smoke
  • Demonstrate our commitment to optimizing the health of our employees, members and shoppers, and the community.
  • Set a standard we hope other organizations and businesses follow

POLICY*

It is the policy of the Hanover Consumer Co-op to maintain a 100% smoke-free environment.

This policy applies to anyone who enters any Cooperative property or worksite.

PROCEDURE:

1. Geographic Areas Covered by the Policy

Tobacco use is prohibited inside and outside the buildings on any Hanover Consumer Cooperative owned or leased property. This policy shall apply to:

  • All facilities, buildings, and grounds, which are owned or leased by the Co-op.
  • Adjoining sidewalks to Co-op owned or leased property
  • Parking lots and driveways that are used by the Co-op
  • Co-op vehicles
  • Vehicles parked on Co-op owned or leased parking lots

2. Tobacco Products

Tobacco products include but not limited to:

  • Cigarettes
  • Cigars
  • Pipe Smoking
  • Chewing tobacco

POLICY ENFORCEMENT:

All staff members are responsible for courteous enforcement of this policy.

In addition to personally adhering to the tobacco use restrictions, all Co-op employees are encouraged to promote compliance by courteously informing visitors of this policy and request their compliance with the tobacco-free policy.

Employees who violate this policy will be instructed to discontinue the use of any tobacco products and shall be reported to their immediate supervisor for appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including termination. The following is based on a 12-month rolling calendar.

1st Violation Verbal warning; smoking cessation education.
2nd Violation Written warning; smoking cessation education
3rd Violation Suspension
4th Violation Termination
