One analyst recently quipped that today’s economic crisis is the long-term result of short-term thinking. Food-industry trends are no exception. Fast, cheap food is much slower and more expensive than you might think, and decades of putting the interests of monolithic agri-businesses over the needs of local, sustainable food systems has had devastating and far-reaching impacts on everything from the environment and global economy to U.S. foreign policy.
Pointing to the Co-op’s contributions to the Upper Valley economy, the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce selected the Co-op as its 2008 Business Leader of the Year. The Co-op’s long-standing work with local farmers and vendors was also credited with keeping nearly 2 million dollars in the local small business economy in 2007.
