Long before sustainability became an advertising buzzword to market everything from game shows to garbage disposals to gasoline, cooperatives were touting the need for a more sustainable world. For an inspiring message about the importance of working together for a sustainable planet, check out the recent commencement speech by renowned entrepreneur and visionary environmental activist Paul Hawken.
“We’re going green this week!” the television proudly declared, subsequently announcing that all of the network’s programming that week would have a “green” theme. But decades before green was a promotional strategy used to market everything from game shows to hybrid cars, food cooperatives were promoting the benefits of organic food, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation. It’s a key part of our Co-op’s triple bottom line of financial, social, and environmental responsibility.
