Genetically engineered meat may one day be coming to a grocery store near you. November 18 was the last day to let the FDA know what you think about the issue, but the FDA website continues to post information about the government’s approach to regulating genetically engineered animals. According to the FDA website, “Genetic engineering is a process in which scientists use recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology to introduce desirable traits into an organism. Scientists use rDNA techniques to manipulate DNA molecules.” The jury is still out on whether food from these animals is safe for humans or the environment, and the ethics of such changes have yet to be considered in depth. Visit the FDA consumer update page on the subject to learn more about it.
