Crispy Sesame Seared Shrimp

Serves 4

Enjoy these shrimp with Judy’s Sesame Noodles (below). Five spice powder is a prepared mixture of cinnamon, star anise, cloves, fennel seed, and Szechwan peppercorns.

1 lb. large shrimp, cleaned
Salt and freshly ground pepper
2/3 cup flour
1 cup sesame seeds
1 tsp. Chinese five spice powder
1 egg white, lightly beaten
2 Tbs. water
Peanut oil for frying
Pickled ginger (optional)

Combine salt, pepper, flour, sesame seeds, and five spice powder in a shallow bowl. In another bowl, combine egg white with water.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dip shrimp into egg white, then into flour mixture to coat. Cook shrimp a few at a time in hot oil, 3 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Remove to a platter. Serve with pickled ginger, if desired.
